Progressive lenses offer a convenient solution for those needing distance, intermediate, and reading prescriptions all in one pair of glasses. Unlike bifocals and trifocals, progressives lack visible lines between prescription areas, providing seamless vision transition from far to near distances.
Getting used to new lens designs typically requires an adjustment period. To adapt quickly to your new progressive lenses, start by wearing them first thing in the morning when your eyes are fresh, and aim to wear them consistently throughout the day.
Avoid switching back to your old glasses, which can slow down the adjustment process. However, brief breaks are fine if your eyes need a rest during the adjustment period. At first, you might experience the sensation of side objects moving slightly when you move your head. But that should go away quickly as you start to wear your new lenses more.
Progressive lenses provide seamless vision correction for two or more fields of vision.
How to read up close with progressive lenses
If you’re new to progressive lenses, reading things up close can take a little getting used to. Here’s how to read when wearing progressive lenses.
- Hold up your reading material in front of your face.
- Point your nose in the direction of the reading material.
- Extend the material an arm's length away. Then, gently move your head up and down to notice a smooth magnification transition.
- Move the material to the side without turning your head; the print will become less sharp. Adjust your chin and point your nose in that direction to bring the print into focus.
With practice, your eyes will automatically adjust to the correct position. Feeling fully comfortable with your new eyeglasses can take a few weeks or even a month. But the transition period is worth it! With progressives, you have clear vision for multiple vision zones without switching glasses. In fact, many people report fewer instances of losing their glasses due to the convenience of not needing to switch glasses to see well at different distances.
