First, the prescription needs to have a doctor signature (electronic is fine).
Unfortunately, we legally cannot use an expired prescription or one without a provider signature. Please contact the California Board of Optometry with additional questions.*

Before we start, let’s check your document
If your prescription has numbers and a brand name for contact lenses, this is a contact lens prescription. This will only allow us to proceed with an order for contact lenses. This is not the same as a spectacle prescription.
If your prescription has numbers only, then you have a spectacle prescription. This will only allow us to proceed with an order for glasses. This is not the same as a contact lens prescription.
Adding a new prescription on the XP Health website
1. Navigate to the ‘Vision Care’ tab denoted by the eye icon and select ‘Prescriptions.’
2. Select ‘ADD A PRESCRIPTION.’ Then choose the member the prescription is for, and select ‘Next.’
- The name on the prescription must match the name of an active and enrolled member on your account.
- If you need to add a new member, you can do so at this step of the process.
3. Select the type of prescription by checking the ‘Eyeglasses’ or ‘Contact Lenses’ box and select ‘Next.’
- If your prescription includes both eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions on the same file, select both checkboxes.
4. Input the prescription expiration date and upload the prescription file.
- If you input an expiration date that has already passed, you will not be able to upload your prescription.
5. Optional: Check the box to consent to provider outreach. This allows us to contact your prescribing doctor with any questions our lab may have about your prescription.
6. Our team will review and approve your prescription. You can check the status of your prescription(s) at any time in the ‘Vision Care’ tab of the XP Health website.
- If our lab team has any questions or issues regarding your prescription, we’ll email you.

*From the Federal Trade Commission (FTC):
You cannot use an expired prescription to purchase glasses or contact lenses. State law determines when your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses will expire. Eyeglass prescriptions usually are good for a year or two, but state laws vary. The Contact Lens Rule says that contact lens prescriptions must be good for at least a year, unless your prescriber has a medical reason for making it shorter. Don't try to buy glasses or contact lenses with an expired prescription. Your eye health changes over time, so it's important to have regular comprehensive eye health exams.
